FE Exam Dates: When Can You Take the FE Exam in 2022?

FE Exam Dates

Wondering when the FE Exam is offered and how often you can take it? You’re in the right place!

According to NCEES, the FE Exam is offered every day of the year that the Pearson Vue testing center where you choose to take the exam is open. You can take the FE Exam once during each testing window (Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, Oct-Dec) and no more than three (3) times in any 12-month period.

To find out what dates your testing center is available for you to take the FE Exam, you will first need to register for the exam with NCEES by following these steps:

  1. Go to the MyNCEES website and create an account or log in if you have one already. Don’t use a work or school email to register.
  2. On the right side of the page under “Common Tasks” click on the first link which reads “Register for an exam.”
  3. Follow the instructions and pay the $175 fee.

At this point you’ll be directed to the Pearson Vue website where you can schedule your exam at the testing center of your choice. This is when you can see the dates that your testing center is open for you to take the FE Exam.

How Often You Are Allowed To Take the FE Exam

While you can register to take the FE Exam on any day of the year that the Pearson Vue testing center of your choice is open, you will have some attempt limits if you fail the exam.

You can only attempt the FE Exam once within each of the following periods:

  • January through March
  • April through June
  • July through September
  • October through December

So if you take it in January and fail, the earliest you can take it again is April. If you take it in April and fail again, then you have to wait until July for another attempt.

Additionally, if you fail the FE Exam three times within any rolling 12-month period, you cannot register for it again until the point when you’ve only failed it twice in the previous 12 months.

So, say you try and fail in January, April, and July, you’ll have to wait until the following February to attempt the FE Exam again.

Your State May Have Additional Registration Requirements

Also be aware that some states will require you to meet some requirements before you can register for the FE Exam. Some may require you to fill out an application or complete and verify your education, for instance.

To find out what requirements your state has, head to the NCEES website, click on your state, and select “FE” under “Which exam are you taking?”

Additionally, you will see a screen that gives information about your state’s requirements when registering for the FE Exam. Most states will simply say that there are no additional requirements, but for some you’ll have to acknowledge that you’ve met the requirements before registering.
